"The songs’ 26 year gestation is a clue that Crouse’s concept of time plays by its own idiosyncratic rules. When performed, this goes double. The pacing is nearly dissociative, chords changing with Osho-like regard, the already-cryptic lyrics drawn to extract a latent OM alive in each syllable. Prima materia from The First State."

"Not Take Upon Oneself To Say (1991 - 2017) is amazing. I feel like the world opened up after hearing it. I feel like there is so much more to the Earth than what I thought. Somewhere, maybe in New York City, maybe in a hole in the Appalachian Mountains, maybe somewhere far from here on another continent, there is more magick. It's everywhere, really, if you take the time to look. "

Message from Specific Recordings:

When you listen to Jimmy Crouse, you join a rhythm that is at first nearly incomprehensible. On the surface, the songs unwind in slow motion: syllables drawn out over chord changes so far that one can easily lose track of verse, chorus, melody, self. The prevailing pace of the world has us driving past him, rubber-knecking at best. If you can, try and give yourself over to Jimmy’s pace. Instead allow the world to hurl past you. From this vantage point, you can feel the glacial pushing and pulling, hanging and sometimes soaring that is so unique to his music. In Jimmy’s hands, time is elastic and can even appear to stand still.

Jimmy is a prolific poet, writer, singer and songwriter. Over the last decade and a half his work has expanded to include a range of experimental approaches to writing, singing, and online collaborations with the band Remote Choir. For these songs, Jimmy held a guitar in his hands for the first time in a decade and returned to a musical thread that had been set aside for 26 years.

The four pieces make up the song cycle, ‘Not Take Upon Oneself To Say’. They were recorded on four separate evenings in the Fall of 2017. The songs themselves were begun in 1991, but were not finished or revisited until now. Each was recorded straight to dictaphone on its first take and are shared here without alteration.
